How to Read Your Prescription?

Understanding Your Optical Prescription

Your Rx is what an ophthalmologist (an MD) or optometrist (a doctor of optometry) provides to correct your vision with a pair of eyeglasses with corrective lenses.

Below is a brief description of what the numbers and letters on your optical prescription mean to help you understand your optical prescription.

R (Right) & L (Left): These letters indicate which eye is being talked about in the prescription.

Sph (Sphere): This indicates the basic degree of short or long-sightedness. Minus (-) means you are shortsighted and plus (+) means longsighted. There will also be a number associated with this which could be small or large. The higher the number the stronger the strength of prescription lens required. This could have an impact on the frames you choose as the higher the prescription the bigger the curve of the actual lens.

Cyl (Cylinder): This is your level of astigmatism (visual distortion), which is the amount of 'extra' prescription you have. Astigmatism is caused by an irregularly shaped cornea and can lead to blurred or distorted vision. If this box is empty it means you have no astigmatism and your eyes are perfectly round. If there is a low number it means your eyes are slightly out of shape whereas a high number indicates that your eyes are very oval in shape and therefore more affected by astigmatism.

AXI(Axis): This denotes the Cyl described above by measuring the astigmatism in degrees. This is used by your opticians when angling your lenses.

ADD: This denotes the 'extra' power you need for close work (Near ADD) or arm's length (Inter ADD). If numbers are shown in this section it means you have different prescriptions for distance or reading, this may then mean you need bifocal or varifocal lenses.

Prism: Prism is sometimes prescribed when eyes need help working together. If you are having spectacles for near vision or to help prevent headaches, prism may be included in your prescription.

Note:

Sphere and cylinder power is always measured in dioptres. These come in decimal form and are commonly written in quarter-diopter values. In contrast, the axis values are whole numbers from 1 to 180 and dictate a location.

It's important to remember that a glasses prescription is not the same as a contact lens prescription so the two are not interchangeable.

What do the numbers printed on my frame mean?

Some frames have a series of numbers printed on the inside of a temple arm (the part that goes behind your ear). The first numbers are typically the manufacturer's style number and color code. But farther down the temple arm, there may be important numbers that refer to the dimensions of the frame. These numbers are the measurement, in millimeters, of the lens width, nose bridge width, and temple arm length. Often the lens width and nose bridge width are 2-digit numbers separated by a square, and the temple arm length is a 3-digit number in front of or behind the others. Knowing these numbers can help you choose a frame similar in size when shopping.

What frame material is right for me?

That's a decision that only you can make, but we can help! If you want a super light frame, go with one that's 15 grams or lower. Titanium frames are generally very light. If you want a durable frame, go with stainless steel or memory titanium. If you are allergic to metals, stay away from metal alloy and memory titanium frames, both of which use nickel, an allergen. Stick with frames made of hypoallergenic materials, such as stainless steel or titanium.

Full-rim, half-rim, or rimless?

Your Rx may be too strong for half-rim or rimless glasses, so full-rim would be your option. Full-rimglasses, especially in the nerd-chic look, are very popular. They are generally more durable than half-rimor rimless frames. Half-rim frames are great for people with slim faces. They show more of your face than full-rim frames, and are more durable than rimless glasses. Rimless glasses are great for people who will treat their glasses delicately, and who want their glasses to be practically invisible on their face.

What can I do if my frames don't fit perfectly?

Call or chat with us within the first 30 days after you've received the glasses. If the frame is defective, we can send you a new one. If you picked a frame that's too big or too small, you can send the glasses back for a partial refund or store credit to reorder a new pair of glasses in the correct size, and we'll explain how to make sure the next frame you get will fit you perfectly.

Do the frames come in different sizes?

Most of our frames come in one size, but not all. The details will be listed under the product description. Please use the size filter to find the one that best suits you.

Can I get the frames in a different color?

Most of our frames come in more than one color. If it does, you will see the color swatches on the upper-left corner of the frame.

Can I order frames without lenses?

Yes! If you choose Frame Only during checkout, it will be half the price listed. Many frames still come with retainer lenses (not of optical lens quality) to maintain frame integrity during shipping. They may be removed if desired.

My frame is out of stock. Can you notify me when it's back in stock?

Yes. When a frame is out of stock, you will see an "out of stock" message below the frame. Enter your email address in the space provided, and we'll let you know when the item becomes available.

What do the Lens Index numbers mean?

The Lens Index number (1.49, 1.55, 1.56, 1.61, 1.67 or 1.74) refers to the degree of refraction the lens provides. This means how much the light that enters the lens is refracted (bent) as it passes through the lens. Lens Index is also related to the thickness of the lens. The higher the index, the thinner the lens will be. People with higher prescriptions should choose high-index lenses.

How do I get thinner lenses?

The lens that is preselected as a recommended option in ② Your Lenses during the ordering process will be the best option for your Rx. If you have a strong Rx, a higher lens index number will give you a thinner lens.

What lens coatings do you sell?

All WhereLight eyeglasses come with Anti-Scratch Coating and UV Protection Coating that are both absolutely free. We also offer Anti-Reflective Coatings, which reduce reflection on the lenses and the glare you see while you are wearing your glasses.

What are photochromic lenses?

Photochromic lenses are specially treated to turn dark when exposed to UV light. When the lenses are out of the sunlight, they become clear again.

What are Polarized lenses?

A Polarized lens is a sunglass lens that greatly reduces the glare from light that is Polarized horizontally, meaning the light reflecting off horizontal surfaces, such as a white sidewalk, a white-sand beach, snow, or sunlight reflecting on water.

Can you replace lenses if I send you my frame?

Sorry, we don't provide lens replacement.

What Are FSA and HSA?
FSA

FSA stands for Flexible Spending Account.

To qualify for an FSA, you must have job-based health insurance. You can only open an FSA if your employer offers this option.

If an FSA is available to you, you can add funds to the account that don't get taxed. You can then use these funds to pay for qualified medical expenses. Employers can also add contributions to your FSA, but it isn't required.

HSA

HSA stands for Health Savings Account. This is an untaxed account that you manage yourself and can use to pay for eligible medical expenses.

To qualify for an HSA, you must be enrolled in a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). These insurance plans have a lower monthly premium but a higher deductible.

A deductible is an amount you must pay before your insurance plan starts paying.

You can't open an HSA if you qualify for Medicare.

What Type of Glasses Can I Buy with FSA and HSA?

Any eyewear product that corrects your vision is classified as a medical product and is thus available for purchase with an FSA or HSA account. You can't use your flexible spending account or health savings account to buy eyewear with no prescription. Routine eye examinations or more serious eye surgeries can also be covered by your FSA or HSA, but your insurance premiums can't be covered.

Eligible for Purchase with FSA and HSA
● Prescription eyeglasses
● Prescription sunglasses
● Contact lenses
● Eye examinations and eye surgery
● Reading glasses (both prescribed by an optometrist and not).
● Eyeglass repair kit
Not Eligible for Purchase with FSA and HSA
● Non-prescription eyeglasses
● Non-prescription sunglasses
● Insurance premiums
● Non-prescription colored contact lenses
Can I Use My FSA or HSA for Reading Glasses?

Since reading glasses help you out with vision correction, you can use your FSA or HSA contributions to buy them. It doesn't matter if you are prescribed reading glasses by your optometrist or if you decide to buy them independently. Both are available to buy with your account.

Are Blue Light Glasses Covered by FSA or HSA?

Most providers will let you use your FSA or HSA accounts to buy blue light filtering glasses with Wherelight. This type of eyewear filters out blue light that can negatively affect sleep. Some studies show that this type of light can also cause permanent eye damage. Remember to check with your provider to find out whether blue light filtering glasses are covered by your plan.

Are Sunglasses Covered by FSA or HSA?

Sunglasses are only covered by health savings accounts or flexible spending accounts if they have a prescription. Non-prescription sunglasses, even if they provide protection from sunlight, are not available for purchase with these types of plans.

How Do I Redeem My FSA or HSA Dollars at WhereLight?

If you have an FSA or HSA debit card you can simply use it to buy any eligible product at Wherelight. If you don't have a debit card all you need to do is print off the receipt of your order and submit it to your provider along with any other documents required. Don't forget that non-prescription eyewear isn't covered by FSA or HSA plans.
